Working Together To Provide Solutions For Varicose Veins

Do you know that over 30 million people suffer from symptomatic varicose veins in the United States? Varicose veins are often mistakenly thought to be only a cosmetic condition when, in fact, they are usually a symptom of a more serious condition, venous reflux disease.  This is a condition that symptomatically and progressively damages the valves of the saphenous vein, while also cosmetically disfiguring the leg.  Some common symptoms of venous reflux disease are:

  • Aching, tired or weak legs, especially after long periods of standing or sitting
  • Varicose veins
  • Burning or itching of the skin
  • Swollen legs and/or ankles (edema)
  • Color and texture changes of the skin
  • Open wounds (skin ulcers)

Overlooking the correct diagnosis often leads to conservative therapy solutions, such as prescribed compression stockings.  Conservative treatment with stockings often fails to definitively address the underlying disease state.  Key facts to consider are:

  1. Compression stockings only temporarily alleviate the symptoms of venous reflux
  2. Varicose veins are usually a symptom of underlying, treatable saphenous vein reflux disease
  3. Venous disease is progressive in nature and may worsen if left untreated

At The Vein Center of Northeast Ohio, LTD., we are pleased to offer the Venefit™ procedure, formerly known as the VNUS Closure® procedure, in addition to other treatment modalities to include endovenous laser treatment, avulsion phlebectomy, sclerotherapy and the recently added VeinWave treatment for comprehensive management of venous disease.

The Venefit™ procedure has been the subject of numerous studies and journal articles.  The results from a multi-center randomized trial comparing recovery rates and quality of life between patients treated with conventional vein stripping and the Venefit™ procedure (radiofrequency vein ablation) appeared in the peer-reviewed European Journal of Endovascular Surgery.  This is the fourth randomized trial showing that patients who receive the Venefit™ procedure consistently experienced less post-operative pain and bruising and returned to normal activities and work faster than patients whose veins were surgically stripped.  Results from the VNUS international, multi-center clinical registry continue to demonstrate a highly effective, durable outcome with the five year follow-up.  Of patients who were reflux-free at one year follow-up, 92% remain reflux-free at the latest follow-up, out to five years.

The Venefit™ procedure is also covered by most health insurance companies, which makes it an appealing option for many patients.

Working together, we can provide patients who suffer from varicose veins and the symptoms of underlying venous reflux disease patient-friendly and clinically proven solutions.
